Fegen to Smålandsstenar

A tour with five mills, a sacred spring and Småland's largest circle of stones

Many cultural-historical sites can be found to the east of lake Fegen . Some of them are conveniently located in the Fegen Nature Reserve. On this tour you will see, among other things, five mills, a mythical sacred spring and Småland's largest circle of stones. Why not combine your tour with a visit to Skeppshult's foundry where you can buy a proper cast iron pan or grab coffee & cake at the unique garden Kärrhults gård café outside Skeppshult.

Sandvik Church

In the Middle ages, the first church was built here on the headland shore of Fegen. The church was burned down several times, including by the Danes in 1644. The current church made of red granite was built in the 1890s. According to legend, a wealthy woman was on her way across Fegen from Sotenäs. When she got into trouble on the lake, she prayed to God to be saved. If she survived, she would build a church. The boat drifted ashore on the headland and the woman kept her promise. The church in Sandvik then became of great importance for the spread of Christianity in the region.

Klockebo mill

East of Sandvik church is Klockebo mill. The mill was built in the early 19th century and is powered by the water that flows from Lake Stora Askaken to Norra Bolsjön. The stream is a known as a troll stream. This means that the water flows to the north. An narrow path that is approximately 800 metres long leads to the mill from a not too large former forestry road (red marking).

Rosendalsstugan

This is an old retained cottage, probably built in the late 18th century. Its current location is not its original. It was demolished in the 1950s and moved from Klockebol and rebuilt on its current site. The cottage is open all year round to visitors.

The trail has several benches where you can take a break, as well as a picnic cabin with BBQ facilities. The cabin has a panoramic window facing the beauty of nature. During the hike you will pass by the remains of an old mill, as well as a beautiful viewpoint.

Vickelsbostugan

The cottage is an old loft cottage of southern gothic type from Vickelsbo village. The single-storey part is a front chamber cottage that has been dated to the 17th century. The two-storey section, which is transverse, has a single floor and was probably built later. There are collections with about 400 objects, including tapestry paintings, old household utensils and furniture, many dating from the 18th century.

Danhults mill

Danhult's mill can be found at Ödesbacka, slightly north of Danhult and a few kilometres west of Broaryd community. This wheel mill is managed by the local history association.

Älgarems spring

It is said that a lot of coins have been found in Älmgren's sacred spring. In the past, it was believed that the water in sacrificial springs had healing power.

Bölaryds mill

Outside Skeppshult is Bölaryd's mill. There has been a mill here since the 17th century. The mill took on its current appearance in 1928. The mill was in commercial operation until 1960. In the early 2000s, the mill was renovated by the Bölaryd mill association. The association usually holds mill days and flour grinding demonstrations.
