Isaberg region
Experience history in fairytale environments
The Isaberg region is full of places to experience the whispers of history in fabulous environments. Feel the scent of the forest and listen to the sounds of the old mill or rafting chute. Pack a picnic basket or combine the tour with a dining experience at Hestraviken or Höganloft restaurant.
Isaberg Tower
Isaberg Tower is located on the primeval Isaberg hill, 309 m above sea level. It is clearly visible from Nissastigen in both directions. The tower, which was commissioned by the Tourist Association in 1920, has a characteristic design reminiscent of the fire beacons of the past. The Isaberg Tower has come to have a high symbolic value for Isaberg and Hestra.
Öreryd
In the early 1940s, Öreryd was a refuge for Norwegian resistance fighters. The camp received over 40,000 Norwegians in total. During the final years of the war, the camp became a military training camp for Norwegian police troops to retake Norway. A memorial stone is now erected at the site and various remains from the time of the camp can be seen. Guided tours of the area are organised occasionally.
The ancient monument trail
The ancient monument trail consists of two trails of approximately 3 km and 7 km and is rich in ancient remains. Along the trail, which goes through beautiful woodland, you get to see burial grounds and burial cairns from the Iron and Bronze Ages. There are also the remains of a wolf pit and a charcoal hut. An information board can be found in the car park opposite Öreryd church.
Lidernas kvarn
Deep in the forest you will find Lidernas kvarn, which is beautifully situated by Rödjebäcken. The mill was built around 1800 and is a water powered mill. In 1915, a saw with a plane was added. The mill was in use until 1940 and the sawmill was used until 1947, when the water wheel wore out. In 1968, Lidernas mill and sawmill was donated to Valdshults hembygdsförening, which has done extensive renovation work.
Rafting chute
This reconstructed rafting chute in Valån was built in 1993 to commemorate the rafting region of the Nissan river . Timber rafting was carried out here from the late 19th century until 1965. A singularly beautiful place to enjoy with a picnic basket.
Radaholm
Radaholms kvarn is located in Stengårdshult parish, a fantastic cultural and natural environment. Hydropower is supplied by Stensjön via Radaån. The sign on Radaholm's mill indicates that it was operational from 1626 to 1966.
Stengårdhult Church
Stengårdshult's wooden church was built in 1912, after the old church burned down. The new church was designed by palace architect Torben Gruth, who also designed the Stockholm stadium.
